Ramappa Temple, Warangal- Telangana
The Kakatiyas and art were almost synonyms
Building marvelous structures
Glorying their bhakti and kala*
Ramappa aalyam gets its name
Not from the Prabhu who resides but
From the sculptor who built it
Dating back to 1213 AD
King Kakati Ganapati Deva
And his Chief Commander Rudra Samani
Decided on a place called Ranakude
For the temple to rise high
Four decades it took for the aalyam to be
complete
With bricks so light, they floated on water;
The carvings on the walls, ceiling, and pillars!
Oh, what does one even say about them
Dedicated to Ramalingeshwara, a form of Prabhu
Shiva
The aalayam has an imposing Nandi
In a posture where he’s ready to take charge
At one nod from his master
The carvings you see depict scenes from
mythology
The pillars, you hear again, produce music from
stone
How I wish we had their bhakti and divinity
To give life to rock and make it play the sweetest
sound

Note:
Kala- art

DeleteGlad to know of this. I have never come across a temple dedicated to Sita or her twins.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't aware of it until I started researching. :)
DeleteIs it true about the bricks floating on water Sri?
ReplyDeleteBoth the temples are beautiful.
I think so, Arti. Haven't been there, but a friend on FB remembered something about it. She said she'll search for the pics.
DeleteThe Kerala temple is beautiful, I just love it!
ReplyDeleteThe architecture in Kerela is totally different, probably to suit the climatic conditions. :)

DeleteI got to know during research. Learnt a lot.
I had heard about the Wayanad temple before from one of my friends. And the pillar carvings of the Warangal temple are so so beautiful... Do they produce music too?
ReplyDeleteThat's cool!
DeleteThe carvings are said to be on an ancient dance drama form that was famous during the Kakatiya period.
Nope, these don't product music, though the empire is famous for its love for music, art, and architecture.
