Lake Amethyst

Credit: Ratna Pochiraju

Not a soul in sight
As twilight darkened
Turning the sky
An ominous shade
Of brooding violet
Mirroring the ancient lake
That sat pondering in silence

Boats floated atop
Their shadows
Doubling the count
Adding to the mysterious darkness
That crept from all sides

Scattered, the brown rocks
Waited-
For the waves to ripple
For the boats to sail
For the unseen presence
To shatter
To give up & go away
To leave them in peace
That was snatched years ago
By a wrinkled figure
Whose curse turned the lake lifeless.

  1. Was so engrossed in your beautiful words that for a moment I had this urge of sailing through the waters and in the boat as shown in the lovely painting. Mesmerizing!

It has been a wish of mine to sail on an empty river.

  3. Very atmospheric indeed.
    It kept me gripped.
Reminded me of The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson.

    1. Thank you so much, Keith. :)
I was surprised by the turn it took, considering Amethyst is my favorite. The painting had more power than the word.

  6. Oh didn't expect the dark ending.... Beautifully penned... I love the river's so much myself that I can't believe the rocks wanted them to be left alone... I would have loved to be the rocks on the river side but yeah not under a spell ofcourse :)

    1. Thank you so much, Ira. :) It was unexpected, even for me. But it fit the painting so I didn't try to rewrite it. :)

  9. The lines "Boats floated atop / Their shadows / Doubling the count" created some beautiful imagery. It seemed so peaceful at the beginning. The ending completely changed the feeling. Well done!
